Security Control

Things to keep in mind before starting your journey

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) has instituted security procedures and protocols for departing passengers, which apply to all airports in the Greek territory.

Personnel performing security and access controls undergo the trainings depicted in the National Aviation Security Training Programme before being authorized to perform the prescribed security procedures.

The security personnel is duly trained and certified, as required by the applicable regulatory provisions, to perform the duties assigned to them.

The security personnel is trained to ensure that all security procedures are conducted without any form of discrimination, ensuring that all passengers are treated with the highest level of respect, dignity, and fairness throughout the security process.

Adhering to security personnel’s instructions will contribute to a smooth start of your journey and to an even more seamless experience at our airport.

  • Consult with the airline regarding check-in and boarding deadlines as well as policies for hand luggage.
  • Longer waiting times may be expected at airport’s touchpoints. Take this into account when planning your journey.
  • Familiarize yourself with the list of prohibited items to ensure compliance with regulations, by clicking here. Check with the airline for further limitations.
  • Note that prohibited items in hand luggage shall be disposed by the passenger before entering the security checkpoint, except in the case that the passenger wishes to place it in the hold luggage (if permitted by regulation for hold luggage and airline) subject to any time restrictions.
  • Pack your belongings neatly to expedite the security screening process.
  • Bear in mind that you may be requested to open your luggage for a security check in the presence of others and the content of your luggage may be visible to others.
  • Be prepared to remove outer garments, electronic devices and other items for separate screening.
  • Exercise caution with metallic possessions to avoid triggering the security control systems.
  • If you are carrying a pet in the cabin of an aircraft, keep in mind that it shall be screened either as a passenger or as a hand luggage.
  • You are only allowed to carry limited quantities of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in your hand luggage. The LAGs must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters each. You must pack these containers in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than one-liter capacity per passenger. Plastic bags are offered free of charge at the screening control.

    Note
: You may carry LAGs over 100 milliliters, purchased from duty-free airport shops or on board provided that:
    - These items have been purchased and packaged in a Security Tamper Evident Bag - STEB.
    - The original receipt is enclosed and visible within the STEB.
    - The STEB is intact, sealed and has not been tampered with.

The contents may be not allowed and disposed at the security screening point, if any of the above conditions are not met.

In case of a flight cancelation, inform the airline about LAGs purchases that have been made from the duty-free shops and require packaging.

Medicines, as well as babyfood and milk are permitted in quantities larger than 100 ml.

Special regulations apply to the transport of dangerous goods (e.g. lithium batteries), depending on the airline. Verify the regulations with the airline before departure.
  • Accessing the passenger and hand luggage screening point requires the validation of your boarding pass (printed document or through your electronic device). You may ask the airport personnel for the time that you may go through the security screening, in case you arrive early at the airport.
  • Fast lane service is available at the airport. Passengers should contact the airline for further information.
  • Empty your water bottles at the designated facility.
  • Remove outer garments. You may be asked to remove shoes, hats, belts or scarves for more effective checks.
  • Remove metallic items from your pockets before passing through the metal detector to prevent triggering the security control systems.
  • Empty your pockets to avoid unnecessary delays. If you forget to empty your pockets, you will have to return, empty them, place the items in a tray and then walk through the metal detector again.
  • If requested, remove any other accessory personal items, such as jewelry, watches, sunglasses, and securely place them preferably into your hand luggage or in the trays provided.
  • Prepare portable computers and other large electrical items by removing them from their cases and placing them in separate trays for screening.
  • Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) must be removed from your hand luggage and placed in the tray separately for security screening.
  • Mind your personal, and especially fragile, belongings and securely place them for screening. Maintain visual contact with your trays during the whole screening process.

  • Passengers are subject to identity verification and boarding pass validation by airline personnel during the boarding process.
